Nexus is a 35,000sqft office building for Nexus Infrastructure, an owner occupier. Nexus Infrastructure comprises of a series of business including TriConnex, eSmart and Tamdown. The location was chosen for its ease of access for the workers of these individual businesses who were previously accommodated in several separate buildings on an industrial estate. The new buildings aim was to create a new community for these companies, to create a home that inspires collaboration, communication and wellbeing.
The site sits just outside of Braintree, Essex between a motorway and dual carriageway a short distance to Stansted airport. The main entrance to the site is from the south, the access drive being central to the building with the entrance directly ahead. Parking sits either side of this drive within a considered landscape.
Nexus is not only just a building but a considered landscape, an oasis between the roads. A wild meadow with biodiversity within which an efficient building sits and welcomes the landscape in through the robust diagram of a central entrance and stair with indoor amenity spaces adjacent to two courtyards, one to the rear to the north and one to the front to the south.
The courtyards are enjoyed by the separate businesses that are arranged internally for best communication, these businesses meet on the generous staircase in the centre of the building and the amenity/kitchen areas adjacent.
The south courtyard is a spill out area for lunch in the cafeteria provided, an offer to the workers to get outside at lunch when the sun is shining.
CLEAR ENTRY AND NORTH AND SOUTH COURTYARDS
The entrance to Nexus is from the south directly into the central stair which connects the two courtyards and central kitchen/amenity spaces.
GROUND FLOOR PLAN
The wild meadow that surrounds Nexus has numerous different tree and plant species and will mature with age to create an oasis in this site located between two main roads.
RECEPTION, BREAKOUT SPACE AND STAIR
The reception area is fully glazed to enjoy views in and out and aid legibility for the users of the building.
CRISP PUNCHED ELEVATION
The facade of Nexus is lightweight GRC which is composed to create simplicity and reflect and balance against the surrounding landscape. Deep reveals add weight to the architecture and the simple diagram creates striking shadows to both courtyards at different times of day to further model the building in its setting.
LIGHT-FILLED AND SPACIOUS INTERIORS
The entrance canopy is designed to signal entrance but to also offer moments of joy. A filligree roof creates intriguing shadows within the entrance area breaking down the barrier between inside and out.
LUNCH IN THE SUN
The people who work at Nexus has generous internal and external amenity space to enjoy the sun or the shade at different times of year.
