Coffey Architects were invited by Feilden Clegg Bradley to help with the competition entry for this 13,000 m2 mixed-use arts, education retail and residential scheme to transform this part of East London.
Our brief was connected to creating a new London home for the Smithsonian Institution on an island site within the Olympic Park, part of a major new cultural neighbourhood. Our design comprised three buildings on a unifying podium framing a space for external display and activity. A ramped primary circulation route flows seamlessly to the foyers of each of the buildings, from where individual staircases rise through gallery spaces to the roof gardens that enjoy views of the Olympic stadium and surrounding park.
Clad in translucent scalloped cast glazing, the threshold of each building diffuses light to tall interior spaces for the display of art and artefacts.
