GARDEN LODGE
A contemporary twist on Edwardian grace - an ensemble of pavilions, crowned with distinctive roof forms, gracefully extends and integrates an Edwardian Lodge with its lush garden surroundings
A thoughtfully crafted extension has been added to the existing architecturally refined Edwardian Lodge. The extension harmonises with the existing structure’s massing and proportions. The extension offers the family a low-maintenance expansion that enhances their enjoyment of both home and garden.
A BALANCED COMPOSITION
Articulated through three distinct volumes the extension forges a cohesive aesthetic dialogue with the existing home, breaking down the massing to ensure the extension feels neither overpowering nor incongruent, maintaining a respectful and understated presence. Two of the volumes contain the kitchen/dining and living area while the detached third volume, that resides discretely to the side, contains a gym and hang out space for the teenage children.
CROWNED BY DAYLIGHT
Our design philosophy champions light as a foundational element, and thus, each pitched roof is crowned with frameless, sleek skylights that draw daylight deep into the home enhancing the airy feel inside while remaining invisible from the street, preserving the Lodge’s dignified facade.
NEW AND OLD LINKED BY A CENTRAL AXIS
Despite its spacious and lush garden, the original house layout presented a disconnect from the outdoors. With meticulous care, we’ve woven a tapestry of spaces that expands the family’s living area without compromising the home’s historic charm. Now, the reimagined internal layout creates a visual and physical procession along a central axis, culminating at a new, see-through fireplace that not only marks this axis but also offers an unexpected window to the outdoor.
IMPROVED CONNECTION TO THE GARDEN
Further enhancing the connection to the outside, the angles of the new extension’s corners are subtly adjusted to point towards the main garden and a prominent tree, symbolising both a physical and a visual embrace of the landscape. The new layout and extension ensure the garden can always be seen when moving through the house.
