Merging landscape and building form to open long views and allow landscape to flow through an exemplary 600-home Build-to-Rent project

FOR QUINTAIN

A successful competition entry, our work for Quintain at Wembley displays unique identity and thoughtful community-focused housing coupled with responsive design and cost efficiency.

The design incorporates mixed-used, mixed-tenure buildings whilst negotiating significant site level changes and car parking challenges. The homes themselves have a high percentage of dual aspect flats and are clad in pre-fabricated pigmented pre-cast concrete panels.

MERGING LANDSCAPE AND BUILDING FORM

Our approach merges landscape and building form. To open up long views through the development, whilst also forming enclosed clusters of garden as in the English Garden tradition, we have geometrically ‘arrayed’ the buildings’ forms.

PRIORITISING DAYLIGHT & WELLBEING

Working with the experiential feedback from local residents, we have carefully considered daylight and sunlight to maximise the quality of the homes and podium garden spaces.

The buildings target:

  • 15% increase in habitat value for wildlife compared to brief request

  • 20% of construction and operational jobs will be filled by Brent residents

  • BRE Residential Homes Quality Mark five-star 5-Star Outstanding Certification

  • WELL Building Platinum standard

MODEL MAKING FOR PLACE MAKING

A variety of different models and prototypes, in varied materials and masses, were made to test the design possibilities.


MASSING DESIGN, DUAL ASPECT

The building form and massing has been developed to optimise the buildings dual aspect ratio whilst maintaining a level of repetition throughout for cost efficiency and standardisation.

Planting swathes of perennials, grasses and bulbs further the English garden aesthetic whilst bringing in significant ecological impact and biodiversity. A strong emphasis on flowering, berrying and wildlife-friendly plants will colour and enliven the landscape.
